Today marks the start of the annual Vegetarian Festival (thetsakan gin jeh — เทศกาลกินเจ), Phuket’s version of the Nine Emperor Gods Festival (九皇爺 —  Jiǔhuángyé in Chinese pinyin or Kow Wong Yeh in Cantonese).
