Sometimes I’m intrigued at the reasons behind a Postcrossing user’s choice of a particular card.  A case in point is this six-year-old Happy New Year card sent from Yantai, China, in early October.  Perhaps they felt the mail service was sufficiently slow for the card to reach me around the end of the year!  At any rate, I think it’s a beautiful card.

Yantai was once known as Chefoo and is the largest fishing port in Shandong Province featuring a population of more than seven million.  The city became an international trading port in 1861 and was fell under German control for about twenty years following the Opium War.  After Germany’s defeat in World War I, Chefoo was turned over to the Japanese who used it as a summer station for their Asian fleet.  The name of the city was changed to Yantai in 1949 and it was opened as an ice-free port.  Because of its fair weather and extensive coasts Yantai today is a popular summer retreat amongst tourists.
