My first Postcrossing card from Taiwan features thatched-roof houses in Shirakawa, Gifu Prefecture, Japan – the second time I received a card picturing a location in a different country than the location it was posted in,  The small, traditional village showcases a building style known as gasshō-zukhuri.  Together with Gokayama in Nanto, Toyama, it forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The type of houses called Minka are characterized by their basic structure, roof structure and roof shape; the term means “houses of the people” and accommodated a wide variety of people including farmers, village headmen, merchants, and low-level samurai.
