Anchorage is the largest city in the United States’ largest state, Alaska. Anchorage’s location on the globe puts it within nine-and-a-half hours by air to nearly 90% of the industrialized world. For this reason the city is a common refueling stop for many international passenger flights and is home to a major FedEx Hub which the company calls a “critical part”” of its global network of services.
A railroad shipping port was established near the mouth of Ship Creek in 1914 and a tent city quickly grew in the vicinity. A town site was mapped on on higher ground to the south of this tent city and Anchorage was incorporated on 23 November 1920. The city experience massive growth between the 1930s and 1950s due to the increase in air transportation and a military presence. A massive earthquake – 9.2 on the Richter scale, the world’s second largest recorded earthquake – hit the city in March 1964. Further growth was spurred by the discovery of oil in Prudhoe Bay in 1968.
