Rügen is an island in the Baltic Sea belonging to the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and containing the Hanseatic city of Stralsund.  The island’s Jasmund National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is famous for its chalk cliffs and the Königsstuhl (King’s Chair).  This postcard pictures one of many megalith sites on Rügen – the Lancken-Granitz dolmen.  This is one of a group of seven tombs erected during the middle Neolithic, when they were used by the Funnelbeaker culture, at least some were in use until the early Bronze Age.  One of the excavated dolmens was used as a shelter by the East German army during much more recent times!
