Yesterday’s mail delivery brought three Postcrossing cards – including my first postcards from Latvia and Poland – plus two cards picturing Pitcairn Island.  A number of recent postcard arrivals have featured winter scenes which I really do appreciate as I haven’t experienced snow or real cold for almost ten years now.  I really do miss that kind of weather – well, not driving in it – and Christmas without snow seems so odd.  It really is difficult to maintain that holiday spirit here in Thailand where the temperature tends to remain around 30° C all year long.

Riga is the European Capital of Culture for 2014 and was founded way back in 1201.  The historic city center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  It’s the capital and largest city of Latvia which had originally declared independence in 1918 but was occupied by the Soviets and the Nazis during World War II.  Following the war, it was the Latvian SSR of the Soviet Union and finally regained independence in 1991.  Both Richard Wagner and Mikhail Baryshnikov were born in Riga.
