Jyväskylä is the largest city in central Finland and is in the western part of the Finnish Lakeland, sitting on the northern coast of Lake Päijänne some 270 kilometers north of the capital of Helsinki.  The terrain surrounding the city is hilly and forested with hundreds of lakes.  Summers there are warm and winters are cold and snowy.  It was once called the “Athens of Finland” due to its role as an education center.  It’s one of the fastest-growing cities in Finland; as of 30 November 2014 it had a population of 135,762.  The City of Jyväskylä was founded on 22 March 1837 by Czar Nicholas I of Russia and the first three Finnish-speaking schools in the world were founded there about thirty years later.
