This was a card I picked up while in the northern reaches of Thailand. Chiang Rai Province is bordered by Laos on the east and Myanmar on the north and sits in the middle of what is known as the Golden Triangle, one of Asia’s two main opium-producing regions. It used to be quite an unsafe place to visit due to the extensive cross-border drug-smuggling operations. Most of the poppy fields have now been replaced by coffee, pineapple, coconuts, and banana plantations. In recent years, drug production has shifted to Yaba and other forms of methamphetamine, including for export to the United States. Well worth a visit is the Hall of Opium at Golden Triangle Park in Chiang Saen District.
